How Will I Know When Tuckpointing is Necessary?
Sometimes the answer to this question is fairly obvious. If you can see widespread cracks or several sections of crumbled mortar, then it’s definitely time to pick up the phone and speak to a professional masonry contractor. Other times, it might not be so obvious, but there is a very easy way to test the condition of your mortar. Take a coin and simply scrape it along the surface of the mortar, if it’s still in good condition, the coin shouldn’t affect the mortar, which should remain solid. If the coin kicks up a powdery residue, then it’s a good sign that your mortar may need tuckpointing.
