Scarborough masonry
A chimney is the most exposed part of a house. Mortar joints, the crown and the flashing where it meets the roof all let water in once they wear. That water freezes and expands through the winter, opens the cracks further and loosens the brick around it.
A chimney also has a job to do: it vents smoke and gases from a fireplace, furnace or boiler. Damage that goes unfixed can put the chimney, and the way it works, at risk.

What to look for
1
Cracked, crumbling or recessed joints that let water in.

Cracks in the top of the chimney, or edges that have worn back.
3
Rust on the firebox or damper is a sign that moisture is getting inside.
4
Small pieces of tile at the bottom of the chimney can come from a damaged flue lining.
5
Brick that has moved, or a chimney that leans, should be checked promptly.

FAQ
It depends on whether the job is repointing, a new crown or a rebuild, and on height and access. After a free inspection we give you a written price.
Worn joints and a cracked crown can usually be repaired. Widespread brick damage, movement or lean may call for a rebuild. We give you an honest recommendation after inspecting it.
Common causes are a cracked crown, worn mortar joints or failed flashing where the chimney meets the roof. Finding the entry point comes first.
It can be, because loose brick can fall. Call us to have it inspected.
Yes. We inspect, explain what we find and give you a written estimate with no obligation.
Mortar needs temperatures above about 5°C while it cures, so most work runs from spring to late fall. Urgent repairs can sometimes be done in mild winter weather.
