Scarborough tuckpointing

Tuckpointing in Scarborough

Mortar joints on brick homes in Scarborough take years of rain, sun and freeze-thaw. When the mortar crumbles, we grind it out and repoint it with a mortar matched to your brick. Our office is on Dunelm Street in Scarborough, and estimates are free.

Why Scarborough brick needs tuckpointing

Many Scarborough homes are clad in brick, and the mortar between the bricks is the first part to wear. After 20 to 25 years it often starts to crumble, recess or turn powdery. Once water can get into the joints, winter freeze-thaw cracks the mortar further and can start flaking the brick itself.

Some mid-century brick is softer than modern brick, so the mortar used for the repair needs to be chosen with care. A mix that is too hard can force the brick to take the stress and make the damage worse.

Our complete guide, including the coin test for checking your mortar, is on our Tuckpointing in Toronto page.

What to look for

Signs your Scarborough brick needs tuckpointing

1

Crumbling or missing mortar

Cracks, gaps or crumbled sections between the bricks.

2

Powdery joints

A coin scraped along the mortar kicks up a powdery residue.

3

Worn-back joints

Mortar sitting well behind the face of the brick, so rain runs into the wall.

4

Damp or white deposits

Damp patches or white salt on the brick mean water is getting in.

5

FAQ

Common questions

How much does tuckpointing cost in Scarborough?

It depends on how much mortar needs replacing, how deep it has worn and how hard the wall is to reach. After a free inspection we give you a written price.

Do you offer free estimates in Scarborough?

Yes. We inspect your wall, explain what we find and give you a written estimate with no obligation.

How do I know if I need tuckpointing?

Look for crumbling or missing mortar, joints worn back from the brick face, or a powdery residue when you scrape a coin along a joint. If you're unsure, we'll assess it for you.

Will the new mortar match my existing brick?

That's the aim. We match colour, texture and joint profile to the surrounding wall.

When is the best time for tuckpointing?

Mortar needs temperatures above about 5°C while it cures, so most tuckpointing runs from spring to late fall.

Is tuckpointing the same as repointing?

For most homes, yes. Both mean removing failing mortar and replacing it with new. If your wall has a special joint finish, we'll match it.
